Barcelona - Diagonal Mar

Work is now complete in Diagonal Mar the largest Shopping Centre in Cataluña, the 3rd largest in Spain.

It was originally built in 2001 to a design which dated from the early 90s and which was not necessarily cherished by all ‘design conscious’ Catalans.

The centre is now owned by Quinlan Private. Colman Architects were initially asked, in April 2008, to assist the client with a redesign of the interiors. We also carried out a strategic review of the whole Centre resulting in some radical visions for the future.

The first phase of works for the interior refurbishment, completed in April 09, now provides a contemporary, bright and vibrant environment. The contract value for this phase of works was £1.5m. It included painting, re-cladding of columns and beams and lighting.

The project was completed in time for the ICSC Conference held in Barcelona 22 – 24 April 2009. A tour of Diagonal Mar, led by Colman Architects, was part of the ICSC Programme
