The Mall, Blackburn
The Mall Corporation purchased Blackburn’s Shopping Centre in 2004.
Colman Architects were appointed in 2004 and, following a complete review of the centre, developed proposals and built a £34 million, 250,000 sq ft extension and refurbishment of the complete centre which has significantly strengthened the Shopping Centre and the regeneration within the city centre.
The project included a 3 storey extension comprising 20 new retail units ranging from 4,000 sq ft to 50,000 sq ft. with a 68,000 sq ft lower level continental style market of 90 local market stalls. 200 car parking spaces were created on a new 3 level car park above.
A double height mall and 3 storey glazed atrium at the heart of the extension will complete The Mall circulation loop. The existing malls are refurbished with an interior design matching the new malls.
Marking the existing West entrance is a new clock tower in an elliptical form with an envelope of structural glazing enclosing a central lift shaft wrapped with an open edged staircase and with a colour-changing lighting design.
The development won a BCSC award in 2011.
