Alex Sansom

Since 2008 Alex has guided the Store Design team at Debenhams as Head of Design. Alex’s arrival at Debenhams heralded a rapid programme of new build stores coupled with investment in their existing portfolio. Highlights of his leadership at Debenhams included the internal refurbishment and external recladding of Oxford Street, a sensitive insertion into a listed mill building in Kidderminster, the multiple award winning new build in Stevenage, the new store in Wolverhampton in association with Colman Architects and the highly acclaimed Watford store.

Prior to his role at Debenhams, Alex started his career with Leslie Jones Architects in 1999. He concentrated on delivering retail, leisure and mixed use schemes for a variety of major institutional landlord developers. The Chimes Shopping Centre in Uxbridge, Martineau Place in Birmingham and the Mall Refurbishment and Boardwalk schemes at Lakeside Shopping Centre being among the many projects he worked on and, latterly, led in his time there.

Alex now joins Colman Architects at an exciting time within the industry and is looking forward to bringing his varied and unique experience to bear within the already highly successful practice.

Alex says: "I am delighted to return to practice with Colman Architects, a well known and successful company, one that I have had the pleasure to know, compete with and work along side since the start of my career. My experience, skills and an in depth knowledge of both developers and end users, means that I can contribute a deeper understanding to the practice. This will support our clients in a variety of ways, creating value where perhaps it may not be evident to others.”

Trevor Colman, Senior Partner of Colman Architects states: “We are very excited to have attracted Alex to the Practice in the face of stiff competition from others. His skill sets, experience and knowledge will be a great asset for the Practice. This is a very exciting time for retail and we are at the forefront of the movement to reimagine retail space and create places for people to Meet, Eat and enjoy as well as experience and buy. Alex’s specialist knowledge will inform and refine our thinking. We are excited about the future and we are delighted that Alex has joined our team to assist us and our clients to achieve great results.”
